On the banner march: flag of Serenissima or Venetian People ?
In 1100 year history Republic of Venice He has obviously seen many changes also in terms of symbolism plan adopted. But results from different sources that he has never taken steps to formalize a state flag. There was the Leone in Moeca as a symbol of the State, and that was enough.
Much confusion reigns today among scholars as to the Banner “marciano” (San Marco), and when they do not make the Venetians themselves, confusion often the others do, and sometimes with the clear intention of debasing the Venetian national identity.
What seems established today is that this banner
was the flag of the Navy Veneta, used in ships, but did not mind too much about the glowing red background, in some representations the background was blue Veneziano (the expression exists Venetian Blue ) or blue, by a national of the Venetian color millennia .
Certainly the above banner is not to be confused with the banner of the City of Venice (to the side) , established by Decree of the President of the Republic of 1997 (click the image to go to the Municipality website).
From the two it is further differentiated by its shapes and colors Banner or Banner of the Veneto region adopted with L. R. 20 May 1975, n. 56 and modified with L. R. of the 22 February 1999 which erased the inscription “the Veneto Region”. According to the regional law “A tricolor ribbon is knotted at the graft of the tip on the pole of the banner and flag, verde, White, rosso.“.
In all the banners you see the symbol of the San Marco Leone, which dates back to ancient times.
The Lion symbol of St. Mark is also found in several other flags, today again the merchant flag of the Italian Republic, as well as in a number of party flags and election symbols.
But none of the above banners have ever been used as a symbol of the Liga Veneta.
Since the Serenissima Republic of Venice has never made the banner official, it is quietly and unquestionably the Banner of the Venetian Nation , and should not be confused with the simple Lion of St. Mark, nor with other banners of entities and institutions or political parties.
